Bright Light Therapy
A natural, effective alternative to drugs
Many of the best healing solutions are completely natural - think ice, salt or oxygen. Many drugs still lack the effectiveness that these natural remedies can offer, and now light is in the same category. So many of the body's functions are dictated by light, and by simply providing yourself with doses of bright light you can correct a number of problems - and without a drug in sight.
How it works
The body produces many hormones throughout the day. The body takes its cues from several factors, and among them is sunlight. For example, a chemical called serotonin is produced and is triggered by sunlight. Serotonin is linked to a feeling of well-being - hence the warm feeling you get when walking in brilliant sunshine.
The body also produces a hormone called melatonin, which is linked to sleep. When sunlight dips, the body begins to produce melatonin to prepare the body for sleep. If the body doesn't receive a sunlight trigger upon waking, it continues to produce it during the day - which can lead to fatigue and depression.
The problem with modern day life is that the majority of our time is spent in doors away from direct sunlight. Indoor lighting is about 20% of the brightness our body needs to register it as being daylight. The result? Low levels of serotonin and high levels of melatonin, causing us to be down, tired and simply not feel ourselves.
Bright light therapy was created specifically to replicate sunlight and cause the body to produce, and suppress, certain hormones. This means that our body now receives the essential triggers it needs to keep it functioning correctly and ensure we feel as energised and positive as we should - every day.
